I pledge to be a lifelong mental health advocate. I pledge because one in four people experience mental illness, but only one in three ask for help. Because I want my friends, family, people I’ve lost touch with, people I’ve yet to meet, and people I’ll never meet, to know that I care about their mental health. And because I want mental health to be taken seriously, and to be valued as much as physical health.
By pledging, I want everyone to know that they are not alone, and that I’m here to cheer them on in their successes, and comfort them in their struggles, with mental health. I am acknowledging that having mental health is one of the conditions of being human, and that is it nothing to be ashamed of. It is powerful, ever-present, and required just as much support and love as every other part of us.
Mental health advocacy is undemanding, unpretentious, and formidable. It unites people across barriers and borders, through creeks and streams, over peaks and valleys. It allows for love and light to spread in the dark, and in the damp. It has just as much of a place in our bedrooms when we’re alone, when we’re crying on the phone, when we’re giving speeches and accepting awards. And most importantly, it makes us feel understood when we’re at our strongest, and at our most vulnerable.
So,
I pledge to take care of myself by establishing boundaries so that I can be there for myself, and for others, in my best and healthiest form. Being an advocate does not ask for my stress, but for my support when I’m ready.
I pledge to be a part of the conversation, around the dinner table, in the classroom, at the office, and wherever my feet may carry me. I will help create an environment where mental health experiences no stigma. My mental health advocacy comes in many forms, and will be embraced regardless.
I pledge to be inclusive and caring in my treatment of others, and in my commitment to help all individuals, regardless of colour, religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, physical characteristics, or background.
I pledge to become a part of a world-wide community of individuals, groups, communities, and organizations that are committed to helping create and improve mental health resources for everyone.
I pledge to become a part of the Step Above Stigma family that helps improve accessibility to mental health care across Canada, while educating the public on the importance of mental wellness. I will become a part of an amazing, tight-knit, student-run organization that hopes to create a world-wide movement that supports, and prioritizes, mental health.
I pledge to step above the stigma, one step at a time.
